Prosit Roy

Prosit Roy is a screenwriter, producer, and director, who made his directorial debut in Anushka Sharma's production firm Clean Slate Films' supernatural horror thriller Pari (2018). He was born and raised in Kolkata in a Bengali family with deep cultural roots. His grandpa, Pronab Roy, is a playwright and lyricist. He attended Nava Nalanda High School in South Kolkata and graduated from the reputed South City College with a Bachelor of Commerce (B.com).  

Roy's fascination with storytelling prompted him to enter the cinema industry. He traveled to Mumbai to learn about professional film sets. Roy has previously worked with a variety of directors and production companies. Vishal Bhardwaj, Ashutosh Gowariker, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, and Abbas Tyrewala, to name a few, have collaborated with him. Prosit Roy made his Bollywood debut as an assistant director in the 2008 film Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. In 2015, Roy directed a short film called Bloody Mustache. Bloody Mustache, made on a low budget, received critical acclaim and awards at several local and international film festivals, including the New York Indian Film Festival. In 2018, he directed Pari. The film received critical acclaim and was hailed as a trend-setter in the Bollywood horror film genre.

He also co-directed the Amazon Original crime thriller web series "Paatal Lok" with Avinash Arun, written by Sudip Sharma and produced by Anushka Sharma's Clean Slate Films and premiered on May 15, 2020. The online series has been dubbed "the best Indian web series” and has received acclaim from reviewers and viewers alike. Among other awards, it won the Filmfare OTT Awards for Best Series. For his film Pari, Prosit Roy was nominated for Star Screen Awards, Filmfare Awards, and Zee Cine Awards in 2019 as the Most Promising Debut Director and Best Debut Director (2018). In 2021, he was named Best Director at the Filmfare OTT Awards for the serial "Paatal Lok."
