Harjant Gill

Harjant Gill is a documentary filmmaker and visual anthropologist. His films deal with such social issues which are often ignored. His research and films focus on Indian and diasporic masculinities and explore the intersections of gender, sexuality, religion, citizenship, and transnationalism. His films have been screened at film festivals, academic conferences, and on television networks around the world, including BBC, Doordarshan, and PBS.

Harjant was born in Chandigarh. He studied film and anthropology at San Francisco State University and then did a Ph.D. from American University. Gill has also received several fellowships and grants such as the Whiting Foundation Public Engagement Fellowship, Fulbright Nehru Award Academic and Professional Award, American Institute of Indian Studies Research Fellowship, TU Faculty Development and Research Committee (FDRC) Fellowship, MDOCS Storyteller's Institute Fellowship, Woodrow Wilson Career Enhancement Fellowship for Junior Faculty, National Film Commission Grant, Public Service Broadcasting Trust (PSBT), Fejos Post-Doctoral Fellowship, The Wenner-Gren Foundation, National Film Commission Grant, Public Service Broadcasting Trust (PSBT), National Film Commission Grant, Public Service Broadcasting Trust (PSBT), Point Foundation National LGBT Scholarship, JB MRC Junior Research Fellowship, and Jamia Millia Islamia University.

 Gill also co-directs the Society for Visual Anthropology Film & Media Festival and co-edits the Multimodal Anthropologies section of the American Anthropology Association's flagship journal American Anthropologist. The names of some of his films are, Sent Away Boys (2016), Mardistan (Macholand) (2014), Roots of Love (2011), Lot's Wife (2008), Milind Soman Made Me Gay (2007), and Some Reasons For Living (2003).
