Karamana Janardanan Nair

Karamana Janardanan Nair is a popular Malayalam film artist during the 80s and 90s. Born on July 25, 1936, to Bhargaviyamma and Kunjuveettil Ramaswami Iyyer, he studied at the Govt Model Boys High School in Chalai and later took a Bachelor of Arts before he pursued Bachelor of Law at the Government Law College in Thiruvananthapuram. Besides that, he took Masters in History at the University College in Thiruvananthapuram. During college, he joined the Student’s Federation. Later, Karamana worked in the office of the Employees Provident Fund Organisation. He participated in the drama clubs in Thiruvananthapuram and actively worked in radio and theater. He studied at the National School of Drama during the 1960s. Karamana got married to Jaya J Nair, and they have three children namely Sunil, Sudheer (who is also a Malayalam actor) and Sujay. 

In 1969, Karamana acted in P. Subramaniam’s Urangatha Sundary. It was followed by some films, where he acted as a protagonist. He is notable for his performance as Unni in Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s Malayalam film, Elippathayam in 1981. This film won the Most Original and Imaginative Film shown at the National Film Theatre at the British Film Institute in 1982, the Sutherland Trophy at the London Film Festival, and two National Film Awards The National Film Awards gets presented every year >> Read More... . He gained popularity as Prabhakaran Thampi in Mohanlal-starrer screwball comedy film Pattanapravesham in 1988; in P. Balachandran’s Agnidevan; and as Fr. Ottaplakkan in the Malayalam action drama film, Spadikam in 1995. Karamana is also notable for his performance as the ignorant husband of Seema’s character in the 1988 family drama film, Mattoral, where he acted with Mammootty in the lead roles. He was last seen in the action film, F.I.R in 1999, where he acted as a Catholic priest and in Ente Priyappetta Muthuvinu in the year 2000. 

Karamana’s son Sudheer is a popular Malayalam film actor, known for doing villain roles, as well as character and supporting roles. Karamana died at the age of 63 in April 24, 2000,.
