Plot

Michael Light is the captain of a mountain climbing team. He is desperate to win the endurance race that covers the whole Dominican Republic. He makes unlikely friends with Arthur, a stray dog, who follows them throughout the race. However, when Arthur lands in deep trouble, whom will Michael choose?

Star Performances

Mark Wahlberg has almost carried the film on his shoulders. Not only did he have enough courage to back such a bold project, but he also ensured that he shone as the lead protagonist. The chemistry between Mark’s character and Arthur [the dog] is just awesome.

Analysis

The very first thought that will come to the mind of any viewer after watching this movie is: How can something be so good?

Yes, we mean it. ‘Arthur The King’ may not be as emotionally loaded as ‘Hachiko’, but it certainly makes its place in the hearts of moviegoers. The bond between a stray dog and an adventurer, who is irresistibly drawn toward it.

Yes, there are some predictable tropes in this movie. However, towards the end, the film surprisingly takes a turn for the better, by not choosing a conventional ending!

Ever since this film was released, there have been a string of negative reviews condemning this film left, right, and center. Either they haven’t seen the film at all, or they resent the idea that a film could be made like this.

What is wrong with this film? Nothing, except for some lopsided editing in some sequences, that almost ruins the whole flow of the narrative. However, if you are ready to ignore it, this film is a rare gem of its kind. The toughest thing in the world is to be simple, yet convincing, and the writers of this film have achieved just that.

The acting in this movie is also top-notch. Mark Wahlberg and the dog playing the role of Arthur single-handedly drive this film ahead. The supporting cast of this film didn’t have much to do, but each actor did justice to their respective role. Oh, did we forget there’s Bear Grylls too?

What’s There

  • Awesome adaptation from book to screenplay
  • An engaging and entertaining narrative
  • Outstanding performances from Mark Wahlberg and the rest of the supporting cast

What’s Not There

  • Lopsided editing in a few sequences

Verdict

‘Arthur the King’ is not your typical Hollywood retreat. It is a tale of friendship, team spirit, endurance, and loyalty, that leaves the audience with tears in their eyes and a bright smile on their faces. This film may not be perfect, but it is certainly not worth ignoring either!
