Plot

Shree, Adi, and Manav open a detective agency. However, there’s a twist: Shree is blind, Adi is deaf, and Manav is mute. A woman named Maria employs them to get her property back. Who is Maria? Why is that property so important to her? Do the three manage to get her property back?

Star Performances

Paritosh Painter does a fine job as both actor and director. He creates a simple, yet engaging narrative.

The actors do justice to their respective roles. However, Bharat Dabholkar stands out for his unique portrayal of a shady proprietor.

Analysis

The toughest job in this world is to be simple. Paritosh Painter decided to accept the challenge, and came out with ‘The Defective Detectives’.

Irrespective of the outcome, one has to appreciate for Paritosh Painter for his courage to make a mystery comedy in English. He decided to make a simple, yet entertaining movie, that is enough to keep everyone engaged.

On that note, he has done a decent job. The direction is certainly above average, and so are the acting performances. The lead trio of Paritosh, Siddharth and Jayesh have done justice to their roles. However, the man who stood out with his acting was Bharat Dabholkar, who plays the main antagonist in this movie. The way he conducts himself is just phenomenal to say the least. The supporting cast have done a decent job, if not outstanding.

However, there are two things which prevent the movie from becoming a laughter riot. In some places, the humor looks forced, and uneven. The narrative is also not upto the mark. Paritosh may have done a good job as an actor, and a decent job as the director, but not as the writer of this movie.

The visuals might look good, but the editing ruins the overall experience. The second half tries to make up for the mess created by the first half, but doesn’t succeed completely. While Johnny Lever is not bad as the old Nawab, a better job could have been done with his makeup.

What’s There

  • Decent direction by Paritosh Painter
  • Good performances from the lead trio
  • Able support from the supporting cast, especially Bharat Dabholkar

What’s Not There

  • Uneven pace of the movie
  • Not so good screenplay
  • Forced humor
  • Bad getup of some characters, including that of Johnny Lever

Verdict

‘The Defective Detectives’ is a bold risk that delivers in parts. Paritosh Painter does a fine job as both director and one of the three lead actors. The supporting cast also does complete justice to their roles. Overall, this film is good for a one time watch!
