Plot

A murder takes place in a communally sensitive area. As the investigating officer takes note, he realizes an entire family is missing. Who is this family, and why they were compelled to run away?

Star Performances

For all the flaws of this film, there are a few things that cannot be ignored. One of them is the conviction of writer cum director Mukul Vikram, who despite the odds stacked against him, decided to proceed with such a bold subject.

The other saving grace is some of the acting performances, with Rajesh Sharma and Chittaranjan Giri as the standout performers.

Analysis

How do you feel when the only thing you hold dear to yourself is snatched from you based on a ludicrous provision? This is a question most of the Indians have still not received an answer to.

Based on true events, ‘Aakhir Palayan Kab Tak’ throws light on the way the lands of many Indians are being unjustly usurped by the Waqf Board through the sheer misuse of the Waqf Act 1995. A loophole allows the Board to declare any piece of land as theirs, and no legal authority can challenge their claim by any means.

This is a problem that nobody should ignore, especially in the light of cases like the communal violence in Haldwani. However, does this film address the problem fairly? The answer is sadly, NO. Yes, the vision of writer cum director Mukul Vikram is quite courageous. However, unlike films like ‘The Kashmir Files’ or ‘The Kerala Story’, which despite being controversial in theme, at least had a compelling story that deserved to be told, this film claims no such narrative.

The casting is good but in bits and pieces. In some places, the actors make you overwhelmed with their performances, but in some places, especially where the antagonists have their say, the acts look less realistic and more melodramatic. The only saving grace is some of the acting performances, especially the ones by Chittaranjan Giri and Rajesh Sharma.

What's There?

  • A bold narrative by writer cum director Mukul Vikram
  • Some performances by Chittaranjan Giri and Rajesh Sharma

What's Not There?

  • Improper Casting
  • Bold narrative ruined by clunky editing
  • Too much of melodrama
  • Cartoonish character development of antagonists

Verdict

‘Aakhir Palayan Kab Tak’ is a bold venture that aims to ask some tough questions. However, between the melodrama and the cartoonish character development, the script somewhere lost its prime focus. Watch it, if only for the acting performances.
