Plot

The movie’s story is set in a village on the outskirts of Satyamangalam Forest, where two thieves Kemban and Suri live. Kemban is an orphan but a nimble thief while Suri is his sidekick. He understands human psychology and is equally ruthless. But the arrival of Balamani, a nursing student brings a wave of change for Kemban. He falls in love with her but Balamani doesn’t feel likewise. She even warned him and asked him not to follow her. While following Balamani, Kemban notices that she cares for an older man at an old age home, so he decides to adopt him. But little do we know about the sinister in his mind of getting a job with the help of that older man. Will he be successful?  What will happen further? The story answers these questions.

Star Performances

The film offers some fantastic performances. There is Bharathiraja, a veteran director, who steals the show with his robust performance as an old man looking for his purpose in life. Then we have GV Prakash portraying a cunning and ruthless thief. His effortless performance and his apt body language and expressions catch the audience’s attention. Dheena as the sidekick tries to bring humour to the table and make the movie enjoyable for viewers. Also, Ivana portrays Balamani with such finesse that one believes her elegant and graceful demeanor. The rest of the cast supported the film’s narrative.

Analysis

GV Prakash comes with another attempt to please the audience with the film “Kalvaan.” He tries to showcase the human-animal relationship, particularly the wild and wandering animals in the villages situated near forest areas. The film’s story is set up against a similar backdrop. However, the poorly written screenplay fails miserably, and as a result, the film settles for the lowest and utterly fails to leave any significant effect. The predictability of the story fails to connect with the audience. The dialogues aren’t any better. The poorly written jokes don’t land at all and in fact some of them misfired too. Also, the emotional scenes hardly evoke any emotion and twists and turns which were expected to be surprising fails to shock the audience. The romantic track of the film also feels unnatural and forcefully incorporated into the core storyline- the first half moves in a non-linear pattern that confuses viewers and feels less impactful. The second half is more focused on the central plot, but hardly impressive enough to make an impact.  The absurdness of the logic given for the unnatural incidents is beyond comprehension. The direction and screenplay are the central drawbacks for this film. One thing that is impressive about this film is the acting performances. Bharathiraja steals the limelight with his effortless and bold portrayal. GV Prakash suits as a thug. Ivana and Dheena with their limited screen-time did their best. The songs were pretty decent, but their placement was odd. The cinematography captures precisely what was necessary for a rural venture. The movie’s editing felt sloppy as here were some irrelevant scenes what could have been removed. The VFX and visual effects were disappointing.

What’s There?

  • Bharathiraja’s performance steals the show.
  • The cinematographer’s impressive vision.

What’s Not There?

  • The predictable storyline of the film is a major drawback.
  • The movie fails to build an emotional connection with the audience.
  • The poor visual effects are another reason for its lack of appeal.
  • Its music feels monotonous throughout the film.

Verdict

Kalvaan is a bottom-line dull film. It hardly has any memorable moments. The director trying to depict a healthy compassion between humans and wildlife utterly failed and produced a product that is nothing but a waste of time. Except for the efforts and performances of the cast, this movie hardly offers anything.
