Yaadhum Ore Yaavarum Kelir is a Tamil-language film released in 2023, written and directed by Venkata Krishna Roganth. It revolves around the story of refugees, particularly Tamil refugees from Sri Lanka. The film stars Vijay Sethupathi Vijaya Gurunatha Sethupathi was not born with silv >> Read More... and Megha Akash Bio coming soon... >> Read More... in lead roles, along with Magizh Thirumeni Magizh Thirumeni was born in India. Plot

Kirubanadhi, also known as Punithan (played by Vijay Sethupathi), arrives in a church run by Father Xavier in Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu. Initially, everyone thought he was a friend of one of the band members and that he came from the UK. However, eventually, they find out the truth.

Punithan is a Sri Lankan Tamil who was raised by a church priest when his parents were killed due to an ethnic cleansing in Sri Lanka. Father Xavier recognizes his musical gift and plans to send him to the UK. But a tragedy occurs just as he is about to leave. The Sri Lankan army shoots the people escorting him and he is sent to juvenile prison.

Years later, he is released, and tries to flee the country. However, tragedy strikes again and Punithan finds himself in Kerala. Thus begins his journey to fulfil his dreams of music and figure out his identity which has been fogged by trauma.

Star Performance

Vijay Sethupathi plays the role of Punithan. He puts on a genuine and powerful performance. He delivers his character perfectly, as someone who has seen hell and come back, who has gone through the trauma of being a refugee. There is also an aspect of ambition and unbeatable optimism in Punithan's character, which he nails.

The rest of the cast, notably Megha Akash as Matilda, Magizh Thirumeni as Rajan, and Kaniha as Kanagarani have also done a good job. The acting in this film is one of its few saving graces.

Analysis

Yaadhum Oore Yaavarum Kelir is a very relevant film that talks about a social issue that affects millions of people in our country and many others every day. The lives of refugees are filled with fear, hardships, and trauma, and this film tries to shed light on the same. However, for such a promising plot, the execution is surprisingly poor.

For one, the characters and the scenes in the film lack emotional depth. This sort of narrative demands emotional scenes, and they must be delivered to perfection. While there is definitely something very raw and honest in this film, it is missing the emotion that elevates such films to the next level.

The plot is also not very cohesive. Occasionally, the writing seems to completely forego the fact that this is a film about refugees and their plight, and the scenes shift to something totally new, like Punithan's romance with Matilda. For a film that is based around refugees, Yaadhum Oore Yaavarum Kelir does not give a lot of attention to important points in the film that would have added to the narrative of Punithan and the issue that the film revolves around.

On the other hand, when it does represent the refugees, it glorifies them too much. It portrays a lot of important realities, such as the treatment of refugees in different countries and how they are never accepted anywhere, police brutality and hostility towards them, etc. Yet, it fails to be realistic and portrays refugees in too much of a positive light. This makes the film unrealistic and prevents it from making an impact.

The film is technically decent, but the cinematography and background score could have been worked upon more to make it more engaging.

What's There?

  • Good acting
  • The film talks about relevant issues.

What's Not There?

  • Incoherent and messy narration.
  • Too dramatic and unrealistic at points.

Verdict

Yaadhum Oore Yaavarum Kelir is a film that talks about an important social issue. It may have its flaws in terms of enagagement, but it is still a very relevant film. It can be watched once for the purpose of awareness and entertainment.
