“The Family Dog” is a Canadian-American animated series. It was aired in the summer of 1993 on CBS channel and was created by Brad Bird. The series is rather entertainable and has an IMDB rating of 3.5/10, which is better than that of “The Adventures of Paddy, the Pelican”. It is about a suburban family which consists of a father named ‘Skip Binsford’, a mother named ‘Bev Binsford’, a son named ‘Billy Binsford’, a daughter named ‘Buffy Binsford’ and finally the ‘family dog’. The story is all about understanding the family from the dog’s point of view.

Coming to the animation, it is not the best available but is quite decent and leaps and bounds better than ‘Paddy, the Pelican’. The character design is really great and the character development in each episode is appreciable. The father’s design is a broad face with a fat tummy just like a country American father is expected to be. The mother has a slim design with a rather curved face and short to medium length hair. The son is a notable character with a mean look on his face but he is known to have a softer side as well.

The daughter has a round, innocent face and medium to long hair with a fat character design. Finally, the main protagonist, the ‘family dog’ is a white-furred dog with a triangle shaped character design and an elliptical nose on the apex. The main plot point of the story shows how the dog was treated and how he is a very kind-hearted living creature caring for other family members and expects appreciation from them. But the usual framing of the family thinks the dog has messed up the situation. It’s a really great plot point, and in some instances, the dog does get appreciated by the family. Coming to the voice acting, it was not bad but is not the best as compared to what we have seen from the 1990’s timeline.

The lip sync is close to perfection. The background music was okay. Again, it was not the best that is available. One thing that impresses me is that the introduction theme has really gelled with the series. It really is a creative way to put up the names from Brad Bird. Coming to the storyline, though we have a lot of family pet shows, this one is really enjoyable. It has a total of 11 episodes which is decent for a cartoon but is not near to the actual length of a cartoon series which is close to 23 episodes by all means.

In the conclusion of the review, the animation is average, the voice acting and lip sync is good, and the storyline is above average. It would have been better if the dog had had a name but there are a lot of emotional scenes in the cartoon that make you feel sad for the dog. The author has also given us scenes where the dog is being loved. If we have to rate it on a scale of 10, it would be around 5-6. I really had a great time watching this animated television series
