The season aired on ABC from 25 September 2013 to 21 May 2014 and consisted of 24 episodes. The season is in the format of mockumentary, with characters speaking directly into the camera. The story is set up on the life of the family of Jay Pritchett. They all live in a suburban area of Los Angeles. The family includes Pritchett along with his second wife and stepson along with his two adult children including their spouses and their children.

The creators made the series by keeping in mind their modern families. In this season, Mitch and Cam both plan to propose each other independently as in California,gay marriage is legalised. Claire joins the company of Jay and Cam replaces as Alex’s history teacher. Cam and Mitch plan their wedding while Lily’s cat has not turned to home for days and so she is worried about her. Cam and Mitch are hesitating in telling about their marriage to Pam, Cam’s sister.

The family is going to a restaurant for dinner although everyone is late whole Alex babysits Lily. Cam and Mitch seek help from Pepper in planning their marriage. Phil finds out what Jay is trying to hide in his closet. Mitchell wants to quit his job and Phil wants to sell a house. Mitchell has to last minute shopping to get Lily the right gift and Lily is taken to a charity function by Cameron where she learned about Christmas. Mitch and Cam are in trouble in booking a wedding venue for their marriage.

To discuss her future, Phil and Claire take Haley for dinner which was unsuccessful. Mitch and Cam go to a romantic date to relieve themselves from the marriage pressure. Manny is ashamed of the presence of Gloria in class trip at the museum. Luke and Alex goes for a date.Mitch misunderstands his new boss signs. Adults go for a trip to Vegas where Cam attends bachelor party of Mitch’s ex. Phil helps Gloria in selling her apartment. 

The family travels to Australia fulfilling the dream of Phil’s mom, Mitch and Cam meets their old acquaintance. Mitch and Cam’s marriage is getting too costly so they decide to sell their prized possessions. On the wedding day, Gloria and Jay advice Cam’s parents on a relationship which makes things unexpected. Pepper finds a new place and relocates the wedding there. Jay and Gloria prevent the divorce of Cam’s parents.
