Did you know that a traditional Indian platter is incomplete without a pickle? You can find n number of pickles in India, and each one gets better and better after every pick! “Pickle Nation” is one such show aired on the“Living Foodz” channel, which explores the world of pickles. This show is hosted by Chef Kunal Kapoor who loves to travel all around India and taste a wide variety of pickles from various cultures and traditions. In one such episodes,Kunal is shown visiting Goa, to taste South Indian pickles on his“ready-to-travel blue scooter”.

The main segment of the show starts with him introducing us with various kind o fpickles, known to be the specialty of the Konkan community. He traverses the Spice village,where lots of spices blossom and are usually located at the heart of Goa. This little state is world famous for its kissed beaches and party freaks, but here, the protagonist introduces us to a completely opposite side of it! Later, Sujata Kamat, a resident of Panaji, Goa is seen preparing brinjal pickles for the chef and telling him that it was locally known as “Vangyacha loncha.”

She shares her story while she prepares the pickle and feels that it makes her nostalgic about her childhood. She informs us that the period of spotting it is from March to May and takes us through the spice gardens, which is a cluster of infinitude beauty, full of greenery and freshness.She also compares “spices” to gold and then points out the reason why the Portuguese had invaded India. At a later part of the episode, she educates us with the fact that Goa includes Anglo-Indians and Konkani people.

The former ones used vinegar in their pickles whereas the Konkani folks mainly used tamarind. Chef Kunal also compliments the pickle made by her which tasted very exotic, even without adding any preservatives and also goes to an extent to believe that its tastes“addictive”. They also highlight the fact that brinjals are considered to beanti-cancerous,and its pickle is found very rarely. Preceding the pickle preparations, Ambika Chandra prepares a pickle from bitter gourd, commonly known as “Karelekaachaar.”

She says that, belonging to the Northern part of India, she knows that pickles are usually made from raw mangoes and lemons. Later, she also shares her story of making the bitter gourdpickle, which she especially prepares for her diabetic dad. He also discovers different kinds of pickles from various states like Punjab, Pondicherry, Ahmedabad, Rajasthan, Hyderabad and many more. A glimpse of him meeting other women from the Parsi community is also shown. Pickles are usually considered to be very auspicious in occasions like weddings.

It is sent to the neighbours for their approval. It is believed that,if they accept it and find it delicious, the marriage is supposed to get successful. It is indeed a startling consideration that sharing a bond as close as marriage, can be decided over a taste of pickle! They also prepare the carrot pickle, which they call “lagan nu pickle”in which carrot serves as the main ingredient with dry fruits to compliment it. They use black vinegar and jaggery, both made from sugarcane juice,which is prepared in a traditional copper vessel.

For the Gujarat is, pickle making is a celebration, where all the family members come together to relish its taste. This show has gained prolific popularity for its unique concept.
