The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, India presents this award ceremony. The 10th National Film Awards were held in New Delhi at Vigyan Bhavan. The winners were awarded by the President of India who then was Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. The awards are put into two different categories one is for feature films and, the other one is for non- feature films. The movie, Dada Thakur got the President’s Gold Medal award for the best Indian feature film. The producer of the film Shyamlal Jalan won this award with a prize of Rs 20000 in cash. Sudhir Mukherjee won the same award as the director of this film, and also won Rs 5000. It was a Bengali language film.

Another Bengali film Abhijan won the award for All India Certificate of Merit for the Second Best Feature Film. In Bengali Kancher Swarga directed by Yatrik won the President’s Silver Medal for Best Feature Film. In the same language, Agragami’s film Nishithe won the Certificate of Merit for the Second Best Feature Film. Sahib Biwi Aur Gulam in Hindi directed by Abrar Alvil won the President’s Silver Medal for the Best Feature Film. Certificate of Merit for the Best Feature Film in Malayalam Language went to Puthiya Akasam Puthiya Bhoomi directed by M. S. Mani. The same award for the second best feature film was given to Kalpadukal. Certificate of Merit for the Second Best Feature Film was received by Neelkanth Magdum for his film Javai Majha Bhala. The Certificate of Merit for the Third Best Feature Film was given to Gariba Gharchi Lek directed by Kamalkar Vishnu Torne.

In Odia, the best feature film award was won by Surjyamukhi and the second best was won by Lakshmi. InPunjabi, Chaudhari Karnail Singh film won a Certificate of Merit for the Best Feature Film. In Tamil language President’s Silver Medal for Best Feature film went to Nenjil or Aalayam. The second best award was won by Annai movie. The Certificate for the third best was won by Sarada. In the Telugu language, category Mahamantri Timmarusu got the President’s Silver Medal for Best Feature Film. Kula Gothralu won the Certificate of Merit for the Second Best and, Siri Sampadalu got the Certificate of Merit for the Third Best Feature Film. Coming to the Non- Feature Films. Among the category of documentaries Four Centuries Ago, won the President’s Gold Medal for Best documentary Film.

Himalayan Heritage directed by N. S Thapa and produced by Films Division bagged the All India Certificate of Merit for the Second Best Documentary Film. The film The Telco Story produced by Hunnar Films and, directed by Clement Baptista got All India Certificate of Merit for the Third Best Documentary Film. Last were the awards given for the educational films made. Virginia Tobacco directed by P. R. S Pillay bagged the title of All India Certificate of Merit for the Best Educational Film. The second best film in the same category was won by The Evolution and Races of Man directed by S. Sukhdev. The ceremony took place on 21st April 1963.
