The NATIONAL FILM AWARDS is considered to be an award that is a great achievement by the artists. It was established in 1954. The ceremony is held in New Delhi every year where Indian President gives away the awards. The organisation was initiated by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, India to celebrate the good Indian films released in 1974. Sinec it was the 25th anniversary of India gaining independence, two awards were specially given for Best Feature Film and Best Short Film. There was two different committees of jury members : FEATURE FILMS and SHORT FILMS. Two awards were also renamed in this occasion: President’s Gold Medal to Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus) and President’s Silver Medal to Rajat Kamal (Silver Latus). The Lifetime Achievement Award also named after “Dadasaheb Phalke” was given to “Producer Bommireddy Narasimha Reddy “.

The two special awards were The BEST FEATURE FILM which was won by “Uttarayanam” (Malayalam) produced by Pattathuvila Karunakaram and directed by G.Aravindan. The other was the BEST SHORT FILM which was won by” I” (English) produced and directed by S.Krishnaswamy.

After the special awards, the annual awards followed in order beginning with Best Feature Film won by a Bengali movie named “Chorus”, the Second Best Feature Film won by a Hindi movie named “ Ankur Ankur is a romantic drama of ZEE Marathi. The Best Actor award was won by Sadhu Mehta who won due to his role in the movie “Ankur” while the award for Best Actress was also won by his female co-actress Shabana Azmi.

All the award winners were awarded with a Medal, cash and a certificate of merit. Awards have been won by films made in various languages allowing our country’s vast diversity to shine and achieve recognition among the masses. The ceremony ended in a celebratory tone with many achievers.
