The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of our country in collaboration with its organ, Directorate of Film Festivals has been awarding the Best of Indian Cinemas Every Year. The prizes for the films released in the year 1990 had given at the 38th National Film Awards, held in New Delhi on 1991. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award for Lifetime Achievement went to Akkineni Nageswara Rao. The Best Feature Film went to Maruppakam from Tamil. It has produced by NFDC and Doordarshan. The Award for the Debut Film of a Director went to Ajayan’s Perumthachan from Malayalam.
The Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment went to Ghayal from Hindi. Producer Dharmendra and Director Rajkumar Santoshi collected the memento. Tapan Sinha grabbed the award for Best Direction for his work Ek Doctor Ki Maut. Graven Image from the English won the Award for Best Non-Feature Film of the Year. Manmohan Chadha's novel, ‘Hindi Cinema KaIthihaas’ seized the Accolade for the Paramount Book on Cinema. The Best Biographical Film Award went to Baba from English. Best Arts and Cultural Film Award has shared by Figures of Thought from English and Vaastu Marabu from English.
The Best Scientific Film has chosen as ‘Biotechnology: Some Possibilities’ from English. The Regional Best Film Awards had preferred as Hemen Das’ Jooj for Assamese, Nab Chatterjee’s Atmaja for Bengali, Govind Nahalani’s Drishti for Hindi, Muthina Haara by Rajendra Singh Babu in Kannada, G. Aravindhan’s Vasthuhara in Malayalam, Mani Ratnam’s Anjali for Tamil, Ishanou by Aribham Syam Sharma for Manipuri, and Matti Manushulu by B. Narsing Rao in Telugu.
Golden Earth from English swept the Award for the Best Agricultural Film, Desiya’s Pratikriya picked up the Award for Best Environment, Conservation, as well as Preservation Film, English Film Safe Drinking Water for All had been the Best Film on the Social Issues, and Ducks out of Water from English, as well as Natun Asha from Assamese had been the Joint receivers of the Award for Best Educational, Motivational, as well as instruction Film.
