The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting India has set up an organisation namely The Directorate of India that presents the National Film Awards every year. The 54th National Film Awards is held on 2nd September 2008 in Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. Former President, Mrs Pratibha Patil graced the ceremony by her presence and gave away awards. The awards have categories like feature films and non-feature films. The awards are known as the ‘Swarna Kamal’ and ‘Rajat kamal’ and along with that cash prize in given to the winners. For unbiased and fair judgement, committees are made known as the jury members for picking out the deserving winners. The films that are nominated are released in 2006.
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award also commonly known as the Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to Mr Tapan Sinha as a director. The special Lifetime Achievement Award is given to veteran actress Saroja Devi and actor Dilip Kumar. Along with them, this award is also presented to the living legend of Indian music Lata Mangeshkar as a playback singer. The prestigious award for the Best Feature Film is won by a Malayalam movie ‘Pulijanmam’. Aditya Chopra and Kabir Khan, the leading producer and director of Bollywood are awarded for the Best Debut Film as a director for their movie ‘ Kabul Express’. Miss Divya Chahadkar won the Best Child Artist Award for her prominent role in Konkani cinema ‘Antarnad’.The child artists are encouraged by nominations and giving away awards for their talent. Bengali actor Mr Soumitra Chatterjee is awarded as the Best Actor for his promising role in the film ‘Podokkhep’.
The dusky Bollywood beauty, Konkana Sen Sharma won the Best Supporting Actress award for the film ‘ Omkara’. Another award is bagged by Bollywood; Swanand Kirkire got the Best Lyrics award for ‘ Lage Raho Munna Bhai’. The award for Best Non-feature Film went to another Malayalam movie titled ‘Andhiyum’. A Hindi movie, ‘Children of Nomads’ won the award for Best Film on Social issues. Bengali movie ‘Bishar Blues’ bagged two awards in the non-feature film set for Best Audiography and Best Editing. An English film by Amol Palekar, ‘Quest’ won the Best Feature Film in English award. Many regional films are presented with the Best Feature Film award in their languages. Mr G.P.Ramchandran is presented with the Best Critic award for the Malayalam movies and Mr Rafique A. R. Baghdadi is also given the Best Critic Award for his prominent critics.
