“Kahaniya Vikram aur Betaal ki” is a TV series telecasted on DD Network, Colors channel. The series is based on Indian mythology. The show aired on every Sunday, at 11 AM. The series is adapted from the original Sanskrit classic, “Betaal Pachisi.” Betaal Pachisi is the work of Mahakavi Somdev Bhatt. Betaal Pachisi is 2500 years old. According to the legend, King Vikramaditya rules Ujjain kingdom. A mendicant, upon his every visit to the King, offers him a fruit. King Vikramaditya later discovers that orbs of Ruby are present inside the fruits offered by mendicant. King, then decides to meet the mendicant.

On a fine day, Vikramaditya meets mendicant under a banyan tree, far away from the city, in a cremation ground. King gives his word that he is going to fulfil whatever his wish is. Then, mendicant requests Vikram to fetch him a corpse. King Vikramaditya, to keep his promise, searches for the corpse as indicated by mendicant. The corpse turns out to be Betaal. Betaal agrees to go to mendicant with the King, but on a condition. Betaal narrates a story to the King and he directs a question at the end of the story. If the king fails to give the correct answer, Betaal would break his head into pieces.

On the other hand, if the King utters any word, then Betaal would fly away. This way, every time King captures Betaal, he narrates a story and poses a question. King gives the right answer and according to the condition, Betaal flies away. This process continues. The objective of the series is to impart moral values to the children in a witty manner. The very first episode of the show is “King Vikramaditya and the Yogi.” This episode features how King Vikramaditya meets Betaal. Betaal narrates him the story of a king Suryamal.

Suryamal marries a girl and on the way back home, they get attacked by dacoits. They behead the King Suryamal and his friend. His bride, who is a great devotee of Goddess Durga, tries to commit suicide. Goddess Durga saves her and brings them back to life. Out of anxiety, the lady puts the friend’s head on Suryamal’s body and Suryamal’s head on his friend’s body. Now the question directed by Betaal is, out of the two men, one with Suryamal’s head and the other with Suryamal’s body, who should be the husband of the bride? Vikram answers the bride should marry the one with Suryamal’s head since the brain controls the body. The series consisted of one season with 26 episodes. The run time of each episode is approximately 23 minutes.
