This is a historically relevant television series that highlights true events over the last four decades in India. To make the show informative and exciting, political happenings have been portrayed in a dramatized version. The series telecasts on the Hindi News Channel News24 with its editor in chief, Anuradha Prasad as the host. The show is portrayed in two seasons with landmark political and historical events that have shaped modern India. The first episodes focus on the life and times of “Iron Lady”, Indira Gandhi, her high's and lows.
It shows how Indira started progressively moving to the Left ideology and how her “GaribiHatao” campaign reversed her election fortunes in 1971. It highlights the Indo-Pak war of 1971, India’s victory and the formation of Bangladesh that happened to be her biggest achievement. The Indira Wave is vehemently opposed despite this victory due to various causes. The opposition, the show depicts, was strongest in Bihar and Gujarat.
The next episodes present the background and the immediate causes of the 1975 National Emergency In Bihar, Jayprakash Narayan, the veteran leader, lead the crusade against Gandhi. Then, the verdict on electoral malpractice leads to massive protests as a result of which Gandhi tried to restore peace and order by making several prominent leaders serve terms behind bars which happened to be her biggest blunder. The emergency was thus declared due to internal disturbances as we Indians know it today. This turn of event is effectively dramatized in the series. The series further progresses to depict how the Emergency became a launchpad for Sanjay Gandhi, Indira’s son.
It shows how in the post-Emergency period Sanjay ran India with some of his friends single-handedly wielding absolute power. India’s history progressed with JP choosing Morarji Desai for PM’s post. The Congress then came back to power in January 1980. With an interesting turn of events shown ahead, Sanjay loses most of his loyalties and subsequently dies in an air crash on 23 June 1980 in New Delhi. The next phase of the series highlights Operation Bluestar, one of the critical shapers of modern Indian political history showing the confrontation between Indira’s Army and the Sikh rebels of Akali Dal resulting in artillery attacks inside the Golden Temple, Amritsar. The last part of the series evaluates critically Rajiv Gandhi’s era and how his political intent marked the beginning of India’s economic history.
The liberalization era ushered in with Rajiv Gandhi’s disinvestment policy. It displays critically how his era is shaken by two assassinations in his own family and his political support enhanced as a result. The show presents in a short, crisp and a factual manner the events that helped or obstructed India to be what it is today.
