It sported an opening anthem which was titled "Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2012". The first episode of the show was released on 29 September 2012 while the grand finale was broadcasted on the 27th day of January in 2013. It was broadcasted on ZEE TV as usual. The contestants were selected by auditions that were organized at various cities in the country. The makers claimed that over 1,20,000 contestants were auditioned to select a total of hundred contestants. This was one of the highest number of appearance fo a reality TV show in Indian television history. It stepped on the track of becoming one of the most participated shows of the country too and build a huge and unique fan base for itself. These selected contestants were then passed through a number of channels to select the best raw talent that needed to be nurtured into professional ones. They were lead to a panel of hardcore judges who tested them with their versatility and judged them on their consistency.

In the first episode, a total of fifteen students were introduced to the audiences for the mainstream competition. They competed for the top ten spots for five weeks constantly. However, three eliminated contestants got another chance through wild card entry and competed for their spots in final ten. The contestants then performed in front of the judges to stay safe in the show. This time, the votes of the audiences were also counted and were compiled with judges' score to decide the faith of the contestants. Top four contestants were able to reach to the grand finale of the show.

The show ended up in style and a new star emerged in the fifth season. Jasraj Joshi won the title of the show after a struggle of fifteen weeks.
