The weekend mega teleserial titled Rabbi, telecast on DD Kannada channel Chandana on 4th February 2012, is produced by a Mysorean named ‘Edward Shamprasad.’ ‘Rabbi’ is a Hebrew word which means Guru. The concept, story, screenplay and direction of this serial are entirely done by Shamprasad. Rabbi has been appreciated by many Christian leaders, including the Archbishop of Bangalore.
The central theme of “Rabbi” is to portray the spiritual and cultural diversity of India. The most important ancient religions either rose from the soil of India or found a fertile home to flourish and grow. The thoughts and teachings of leaders like Buddha, Jesus, Kabir, Muhammed and Guru Nanak have influenced several people in our country and abroad. The teachings of Jesus, in particular, reached India centuries ago, brought by his direct disciple St Thomas. But there had been no further attempts to present those teachings in a mass-friendly manner, which is integral to Indian culture and accessible to any common Indian..
Bible and Jesus are presented in an Indian form and cultural context, in a format that includes a contemporary Indian family setting with the Biblical story being depicted in the background with narrators – a pair of grandparents playing an intermediary role. Rabbi portrays social and moral values such as concern, cooperation, compassion, common good, courtesy, social service, patience, leadership, kindness, peace, integrity, democracy, justice, secularism, etc. You should definitely give it a try if you are a seeker for knowledge.
