Kerala State Film Awards were started in the year 1969 to identify and honor the talents in Malayalam Film Industry. From 1969 to 1997, these awards were given directly by the Department of Cultural Affairs, Government of Kerala. Initially, there were fifteen awards given and as of now, thirty awards are being given for the contributions towards the development of the Malayalam Film Industry. The best performers are chosen by an independent jury. This jury is appointed by Department of Cultural Affairs, Government of Kerala. In the third installment of the awards function in 1971, Sathyan won the award for the best actor for his performance in Karakanakadal. His counterpart Sheela received the award for the best actress. Sankaradi was announced as the second best actor. Kaviyoor Ponnamma got the second best actress award. Sarasayya was adjudged to be the best Malayalam film for the year 1971. Sindooracheppu settled as the second best film and Karakanakadal got the third best feature film of 1971.

Master Vijayakumar received the Best Male Child Artist Award. Meanwhile, Baby Sobha received the Best Female Child Artist Award. Uroob won the award for story writing. Meli Irani got an award for the photography. S.L. Puram got the best scriptwriter award. Sreekumaran Thampi got the award for the best lyricist. The award for the best music director went to Dakshinamoorthy. “ K J Yesudas Kattassery Joseph Yesudas shortly called as K J Ye >> Read More... ” got the award for Best Male Singer, whereas P Susheela received the Best Female Singer Award. The best editor award was given to Venkitaraman. R.B. Mani got the best art director award.
