An award ceremony is organized every year for the movies made in Kerala. This award function is known as Kerala State Film Awards. Kerala State Chalachitra Academy presents this award since 1998. This award functions were started in the year 1969. Department of Cultural Affairs, Government of Kerala, managed this ceremony directly from 1996 to 1997. The Department of Cultural Affairs, Govt. of Kerala and an independent jury formed by the academy decides the awardees. The board generally consists of prominent personalities from the movie industry. A separate team is created for awards in the literature of films.
The movies are academically, annually invited for the awards and before deciding the winners the board scrutinise the movies that are submitted. These awards are given to encourage the movies with artistic values and to improve technicians, artists, and producers further. Deceleration of award is made by the Minister for Cultural Affairs, and these awards are honoured by the Chief Minister of Kerala. Daivathinte Vikrithikal received Best Film Award. Producer and Director of the movie was ' Lenin Rajendran'.
Kudumbasametham honoured for Second Best Film. Producer of the film was Mumtaz Bashir and Directed by Jayaraj. Hariharan was acknowledged for Best Director Award for Sargam. Murali received Best Actor Award for Adharam. ' Sreevidya' honoured by Best Actress Award for Daivathinte Vikruthikal. Manoj K.Jayan was awarded as Second Best Actor for Sargam. Santhi Krishna received Second Best Actress for Savidham. Master Sidhardha for ' Yodha' Master Badusha for 'Pappayude Swantham Appoos' honoured by Child Artist Award.
M. Mukundan awarded with Best Story Writer for Daivathinte Vikruthikal. Santhosh Sivan & Venu acknowledged by Photography (Colour) Award for Aham. Kaloor Dennis received Best Screen Play Writer for Kudumba Sametham. P.Bhaskaran honoured by Lyricist for Venkalam. Ravi Bombay awarded as Best Music Director. Johnson acknowledged by Best Back Ground Music Director for Sadayam. M.G. Sreekumar received Best Male Singer for Different Films. K.S.Chithra honoured by Best Female Singer for Savidham. Sreekar Prasad acknowledged by Best Editor Award for Yodha.
Bose was awarded as Best Sound Recordist for Yodha. Vijaya Colour Lab received Best Processing Award for Aham. Pattanam Rasheed honoured by Best Makeup-man for Adharam. Danda Pani acknowledged by Best Costume designer for Daivathinte Vikruthikal. Anandavally awarded as Best Dubbing Artist for Adharam. Noottandinte Sakshi received Best Documentary Film Award. The movie was Produced by Salam Karasseri and Directed by Sasibhooshan. Venkalam honoured by Best film with popular appeal and aesthetic value.

Madu received Special Jury Award for the best performance in Kudumba Sametham. Chalachitra Prasthangal awarded as Best Book on Cinema. The author of the book was Aravindan Vallachira. T. E. Vasudevan acknowledged by Special reward for valuable contribution to Malayalam Cinema.
