The 56th Filmfare Awards South is held once a year, to honor the exceptional artists of the South Indian cinema. It was held on 31 July 2009 in Hyderabad, India, to give tribute to the best South Indian movies produced in the year 2008.

The show covers all the honorable awards from Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor (Male), and many more awards in the stream of languages like Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada. The nominations of some of the versatile performers are made for each award, out of which the only one gets selected for the award.

From Kannada movies, Gaalipatta and Mussanjemaatu were the most nominated movies with 11 nominations. The movie Moggina Manasu won 5 awards. From Kannada movies, E. Krishnappa got the Best Film award, the Best Director award was honored to Shashank for his movie Moggina Manasu, the Best Actor award was won by Ganesh for his movie Gaalipatta, and the Best Actress award was won by Radhika Pant for her movie Moggina Manasu.

While, in the case of Malayalam movies, Thirakkatha bagged the highest number of nominations, that is 9 nominations. The movie, Thirakkatha achieved 6 awards. From Malayalam movies, Thirakkatha was honored with the Best Film award, Ranjith was honored by the Best Director award, and Priyamani won the Best Actress award for this movie.

Among the Tamil movies, the most nominated movies were Subramaniyapuram, Vaaranam Aayiram, and Yaradi Nee Mohini having 7 nominations. The movie Vaaranam Aayiram won 5 awards.
