The 4th successive edition of Univercell Vijay Awards, hosted by C. Gopinath, took place on June 13, 2009, to recognize the excellence of professionals in Kollywood, for 131 movies released in the year 2008. The Jury members selected winners from about 32 different categories like the Best Film of the Year, along with the following recognition for both male and female actors alike, such as the Best Actor Award, Best Supporting Actor Award, Best Playback Singer Award, and Best Debut Actor Award. The annual celebration also acknowledges the Best Film Editor, Best Lyricist, Best Choreographer, Best Dress Designer, Best Dialogue Writer, and Best Art Director among others.

It received the maximum number of awards at the star-studded gathering. It won five awards in different categories creating a triumphant jiffy for the entire team on the stage while receiving the ‘Best Crew’ award.

Child artists Sriram and Kishore won the ‘Best Child Artiste’ awards for their commendable act. At the same time as director Pandiraj, a former assistant to Cheran got himself the ‘Best Find of the Year' Award for ‘Pasanga’ and actor Vimal received the ‘Best Newcomer' (male) award from The Member of Parliament Kanimozhi. Jayaprakash was acknowledged the ‘Best Supporting Actor' (Male) for the similar picture. The speech and hearing impaired actor Abinaya, known for her portrayal of Pavithra, grabbed the ‘Best Supporting Actor' (female) and also received a standing ovation for her performance in Samuthirakani’s directed- ‘Nadodigal.' The jury also presented awards to five groups for the Favorite Category chosen via Vijay TV viewer.

Actors Vijay and Anushka won the Favorite Hero and Favorite Heroine awards for their amazing chemistry in Babu Shiva’s direction- ‘Vettaikaran.' ‘Ayan' starring Suriya was chosen as Favorite Film and 2009, Favorite Song of the Year Award went to ‘Oru Chinnathamarai.' Prominent Film-Director Samuthrakani bagged the Favorite Director Award. The jury members, amongst the 27 categories, picked actors Prakashraj and Pooja as the Best Actor and Best Actress for their films ‘Kancheevaram' (written and directed by Priyadarshan) and ‘ Naan Kadavul Click to look into! >> Read More... As the Best Director, the award went to Bala for his direction of ‘Naan Kadavul'. ‘Nadodigal' got the best film of 2009, Harris Jayaraj got his fourth Best Music Director Award. As Suriya received the Best Entertainer of the Year, Santhanam bagged the Best Comedian for Siva Manasula Sakthi, and Rajendran grabbed the Best Villain Award for ‘Naan Kadavul.'
