Based on the famous novel by Devan in the same name, this popular TV series was aired on Doordarshan with the celebrated comedian Y.Gee. Mahendra playing the title role of the failed bank clerk turned comic detective. The story revolves around Sambhu (Y.Gee. Mahendra) catching robbers, solving murders, recovering stolen jewellery and nabbing kidnappers, all through blind luck. Thuppariyum Sambu was writted by the legendary humorist Devan, which was in turn serialized into a comic series by Gopulu in Ananda Vikatan magazine. The TV series ran for a total of 15 episodes and was produced by S.Krishnaswamy of Krishnaswamy Associates who was also the director for this series.
