Sudipto Chatterjee is a famous Bengali Actor, Playwriter, and Poet. He was born on 26 July 1964 in Kolkata. His father is Sisir Chatterjee, and his mother is Tripti Chaterjee. He did his schooling at Don Bosco School, Park Circus, and completed his graduation in English from the prestigious St. Xavier’s College. Later, he pursued his studies in dramatics at the National Theater Institute, Eugene O'Neill Theater Center, Waterford CT, USA, and was honored with Phd with distinction from Tisch School of the Arts, New York University,.

During childhood, he was mentored by famous playwright, actor, and founder-member of the Kolkata-based Bengali theatre group Nandikar, Ajitesh Bandhopadhyay. In 1984, he won an Award from the Government of West Bengal for his adaptation of the play The Crucible. Sudipto acted in the Production of Banik. He has also done several television productions and plays as an actor and screenwriter. His solo performance,  Man of The Heart, was highly appreciated.

In New York, he has organized various plays and Epic workshops under the guidance of Richard Schechner. He started his teaching career at the Department of Drama and Dance at Tufts University and then at the Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. He was also a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) at the Department of English and Drama, Loughborough University. He was a visiting faculty at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, as a Senior Fellow at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Advanced Studies and Arts and Aesthetics.

He was also a Research Fellow at the International Research Center, Interweaving Performance Cultures, Freie Universität Berlin from 2011-12. He has also made short films and documentaries, and Free to Sing is the most famous among them. His Bengali Poetry, Asamparka, was published by Bhashabandhan at the Kolkata Book Fair in 2014. His popular plays are Rajar Mrityu, Khadai, Occupation of Othello, Man of the Heart, Proteeti, Desire Under Elms, and Mukhomukhi. Currently, he is the artistic director of the Kolkata-based theatre group Spectators.
