Syed Hasan Imam is a Bangladeshi actor, television director, film director, and cultural personality. He was born on July 27, 1935. Syed Hasan Imam’s place of birth is Bardhaman, Bengal Presidency, British India. He completed his matriculation exam at Bardhawan Town School. After that, he took his graduation at Burdwan Raj College from 1952 to 1954 and then Technical College from 1954 to 1957. He used to play football and cricket in West Bengal School teams. He has achieved the pinnacle of fame by acting. Besides acting, he has also worked as a recite, sound soldier, and director of the independent Bengali radio station. He is a cultural activist of the progressive gharana. Though, he was a bank officer, and worked in the National Bank of Pakistan. In 1960, he began acting in films and on television from 1964. He marked his film debut in the film “Dharapat,” directed by Salahuddin. Syed Hasan Imam made his debut on television in the second play of Bangladesh Television, “Ondhokartai Alo,” written & directed by Nurul Momen.

Therefore, he made his directorial debut with the film “Lalon Fakir” in 1972. Followed by this, he directed other films like “Lal Shobujer Pala” (1981), “Obichar,” and many more. He was among the co-founders of Cinema and Natok Shilpo Samiti. He has contributed thoroughly to the cultural and entertainment arena. Throughout his career, he has bestowed with many prestigious awards, including Ekushey Padak (1999), Independence Day Award (2016), Swadhinata Padak (2016), and Bangladesh National Film Award for Lifetime Achievement (2014). In 2018, he also received the Standard Chartered – The Daily Star Celebrating Life Lifetime Achievement Award.

In 1971, Syed Hasan Imam was one of the pioneers behind the Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra during the Bangladesh Liberation War. After joining the Liberation War, he was appointed as the head of the theatre department of the Swatantra Bangla Radio Centre. Also, he served as the president & convener of several organizations, including the Bangladesh Television Theatre Artist & Drmatists’ Parliament, the Bangladesh Udichi Artists’ Association. He was the founding president of the Association of Television Dramatists and Dramatists for almost thirty-eight years. In 2010, he was an honorary fellow of Bangla Academy. The veteran actor-director has also been honoured with another esteem award, Geetanjali Award from Prime Minister’s Political Affairs Advisor HT Imam.
