The dawn of a free India saw the rise of a legend in the form of Kali Banerjee, who took the slowly emerging Bengal cinema by storm. He was born in Calcutta in 1921 on the 20th of November during the British colonial rule. He was born as Kaliprasad Bandyopadhyay to Manindranath Bandopadhyay and Bhavani Devi. He completed his education from Satyabhama Institution and secured a place in Ripon College, but he could not continue his studies for some reason. He then took a job with the Air Force as an interpreter in the wireless headquarter, situated in Delhi. He also worked for some time in the American Army Hospital.

His career on the silver screen began with his introduction to the famous director Hironmoy Sen, who gave him his first break as a villain in Burmar Pathe. His acting brought him great acclaim and recognition and one by one he began to deliver outstanding performances. His movie Neel Akasher Niche (1956) was screened at Delhi, especially for the prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. His amazing portrayal of a Chinese vendor in the streets of Kolkata during India’s freedom struggle brought many people on the verge of tears. His talent for the realistic portrayal of a common man made him the first choice of the directors who were working on realistic films. His ability to transform into the character completely and utterly made him the most sought-after actor of Bengali cinema for almost three decades. After watching his performance in movies such as Paras Patthar, Kabuliwala, Ajantrik, Teen Kanya, Louhokopat, etc., one cannot help but admire his prowess in the portrayal of a common Bengali man. His portrayal of the literary character was so brilliant that not only were the readers appeased but the audience felt it become a reality in all the flesh and blood and bone, right in front of their eyes. Apart from the silver screen, he worked in theater as well, in association with Bharatiya Gananatya Sangha. On 5th July 1993, everybody mourned the loss of the raw talent and the dynamic personality that was associated with Kali Banerjee. He had left the world, leaving behind only his memories and hard work for the world- to remember him by, to keep on appreciating his quality performances and be entertained.
