Manabendra Mukhopadhyay was an Indian music composer and singer in Bengali films. He was born on August 11, 1929. Manabendra Mukhopadhyay’s place of birth is Kalighat, Calcutta, British India. His father was Shri. Atulchandra Mukhopadhyay. He married Bela Mukhopadhyay. His daughter, Manasi Mukhopadhyay, is a singer.  Manabendra Mukhopadhyay began his music with his uncle Ratneshwar Mukherjee (Sangeet Acharya, Sangeet Ratnakar, and Sangeet Prabhakar).

He impressed all with his first disc named “Nai Chondon Lekha Sriradhar Chokhe Nai Nai Shyamo Rai” in 1953. He released his two records, namely “Janina Tumi Kothay” and “Phire Dekho Na,” written by Sidheswar Mukhopadhyay in association with HMV. He got trained in Bhajans, Kirtans, and Bhaktigeeti at a very young age. Influenced by his trained classical expert uncles, he entered the world of music.

His numerous songs started to hit the airwaves, including “Emmi Kore Porbe Mone” and “Ghumayona Saheli Go.” His successful songs include “Jodi Amake Dekho Tumi Udashi” & “Sei Chokh Kothai Tomar” by Abhijit Banerjee, "Ami Parini Bujhite Parini" and “Jodi Jante” composed by Salil Chowdhury Salil Chowdhury was a music composer, instrumental >> Read More... , "Birohini Chiro Birohini" by Himangshu Dutta Himangshu Dutta was a celebrated music composer ba >> Read More... , and many more. He was a great scholar of Kazi Nazrul Islam’s songs. Also, he got trained by Indubala Devi and Angurbala Devi in Nazrul’s songs during 1929 - 1942. As Nazaulgeeti in the mid-sixties of the last century, he was the first to score in his disc record of Nazrul’s songs.

Manabendra Mukhopadhyay marked a film debut as a music director for Uttam Kumar Uttam Kumar was matinee idol of Bengali cinema. He >> Read More... ’s film Chapadangar in 1954. Before this, Manabendra Mukhopadhyay did a cameo in Uttam Kumar starrer Bengali comedy film “Sharey Chuattor” and sang a song. As a music director, he gave his audition at Tarashankar’s house as the writer wished to hear the tunes. In 1958, Robin Chattopadhyay composed music for “Lalu Bhulu,” a highly successful film in Bengal. In the movie, Manabendra Mukhopadhyay sang numerous songs with excellent efficiency, such as 'Dukho Amar Shesh kore dao Probhu,' 'Jar Hiya Akasher Nil Nilimay,'  'Surjo Tomar Sonaar Toron Kholo,' 'Dukher Pothe Naai Jodi,' 'Ei Pran Jharona Jaglo.’ The lyrics were written by Sailen Ray.

Raichand Borai invited Manabendra Mukhopadhyay to sing kirtans of Lord Chaitanya & the song “Jagannath Jagat Bandhu.” He composed music in several Bengali films, including Mayamrigo (1960), Badhu (1962), Godhuli Belay (1965), Jato Mat Tato Path, Joy Jyanti (1970), Sudur Niharika (1978), and many more. In the 1980s, he focused on Nazrul Geeti and Bag Bajarer Gaan. Manabendra Mukhopadhyay died on January 9, 1992.
