Sugata Marjit is the 52nd Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University. He is the director of the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences. Also, he is the first distinguished professor of the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade. He is the project director of the Centre for Training and Research in Public Finance and Policy (CRPF). It is a Ministry of Finance fund initiated by the Government of India. He completed his Ph.D. program at the University of Rochester. Now, he is working as the editor of the South Asian Journal of Macroeconomics and Public Finance. He has published over 200 papers in well-known journals like AER, IER, JDE, JET, JIE, European Physical Review, and many more. He has been invited to more than 50 universities across the globe.

His books have been published by the Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, Springer Nature, etc. Sugata wrote his first book in 1997, “India's Exports: An Analytical Study,” published by the Oxford University Press. He has written many books, including “International Trade, Wage Inequality, and the Developing Economy: A General Equilibrium Approach,” “Joint Ventures, International Investment and Technology Transfer,” “International Trade and Economic Development: Essays in Theory and Policy,” “Financial Intermediation in a less developed economy the history of the United Bank of India,” “The Outsiders: Economic Reform and Informal Labour in a Developing Economy,” and “Virtual Trade and Comparative Advantage: The Fourth Dimension.” He won several awards for his works. In 1999, he was honored by the Bengal Economic Association for promoting teaching and research works in West Bengal. He won the Recipient of the Panchanan Chakravarty Memorial Award.

He got the Mahalanobis Memorial Medal in 2002 from the Indian Economic Society. In 2003, he received of the Best Paper Award US$ 10,000 on the theme “Globalization and Inequality” from the Global Development Network (World Bank). Also, he was honored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research with the V.K.R.V. Rao National Award for Young Social Scientist. And he was titled as “External Research Fellow” by the Nottingham Centre for Research on Globalization and Economic Policy, University of Nottigham. In 2020, he was honored by Professor AL Nagar, Indian Economic Society. He has researched topics like International Economics, Economic Development, Economics of Corruption and Governance, Banking and Finance, the West Bengal Economy, the Indian Economy, Rational Choice Models of Political Economy, and many others. He is a man of discipline and believes that discipline is the key to achieving many things.
