In 1976, Rankin was born in the Louisiana city of Baton Rouge. Until he was eleven, he lived with his parents and three older sisters. Later, the family relocated to Houston, Texas. Rankin completed his secondary education in Texas. Rankin decided to pursue a career as a stuntman after seeing the television show “The Fall Guy.” He later found that the leading actor, Lee Majors, was just a character actor. Rankin debuted as an actor through the television show “Unsolved Mysteries.” In 1997, he featured in the drama film “The Apostle.” He played a minor role. He started acting in TV shows including “NYPD Blue, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Philly” in 2000.

Rankin appeared in eleven episodes of “My Guide to Becoming a Rock Star” in 2002 as "Doc." He starred in the NBC series “Trauma’ as "Tyler Briggs" in 2009. However, after only 18 episodes, the show was canceled. From 2011 to 2012, he played a central role in the crime drama “Unforgettable.” After the show was restructured, his character was killed off in the second season. He also starred in TNT's drama “Claw as Bryce Hussar” in 2017.

Rankin relocated to Los Angeles in 2000, after meeting Jill Farley. He proposed to her while filming the pilot episode of “Trauma.” They married on 23rd October 2010, and they have a son and a daughter. Rankin featured in several movies, including “The Apostle (1997), Friendship (2010), Pawn Shop Chronicles (2013), Carman the Champion (2001), White House Down (2013), Hell or High Water (2016), Dallas Buyers Club (2013), and Santeria: The Soul Possessed (2012).”

He also featured in various television shows like “Unsolved Mysteries (1997), Buffy the Vampire Slayer (2000), Spin City (2001), Birds of Prey (2002), All About the Andersons (2003), Without a Trace (2004), Bionic Woman (2007), Law and Order (2008), and My Name Is Earl (2008).” His other acting credits include “The Plain Sight (2008), The Mentalist (2010), All Signs of Death (2010), Big Love (2011), Breaking Bad (2012-2013), The Newsroom (2014), Halt and Catch Fire (2015), Claws (2017), and The Umbrella Academy (2020).” Throughout his acting career, critics and audiences complimented him for his outstanding performance.
