Brain McNamara is an actor, director, and producer from the United States who has appeared in over 100 television and film roles. He was born on November 21, 1960, in New York City. Later, he starred alongside Steve Guttenberg and Ally Sheedy in the science fiction film Short Circuit (1986), a box-office success. Following that, he gave a strong lead performance in Billionaire Boys Club (1987) as a character named Dean Karny, based on a true story, for which he got nominated for a Golden Globe Award in 1987.

In the movie Caddyshack II (1988), Brian transitioned into slapstick comedy in a supporting role, sharing the screen with veteran comedians. Later, he appeared on numerous high-quality television shows, including Monk (2002), The O.C. (2003), Ghost Whisperer (2005), and Manhattan, AZ (2000).

He worked in feature films such as Short Circuit and Arachnophobia before landing the role of General Holden, based on his brother, retired US Navy Captain Christopher McNamara, in the military drama Army Wives (2007–2013), which he would continue to play for several seasons. In 2000, he starred in "A Diva's Christmas Carol," a television series. McNamara starred in the Disney sci-fi television series Earth Star Voyager. The thriller Lost Signal (2006) was Brian's directorial debut, in which he also starred. He also appeared in the full-motion video game Silent Steel in 1995 and the 2010 NCIS: Los Angeles episode "Little Angels." In college, McNamara majored in business but minored in theatre. He obtained a real estate licence but never used it. Brian McNamara has a daughter, Brenna, and a son, Tyler.
