Joel T. Schumacher is an American screenwriter, producer, and director. He is best known for his work in the movies St. Elmo’s Fire, Batman and Robin, A Time to Kill, Batman Forever, The Client, The Incredible Shrinking Woman, Falling Down, and Cousins, among others. Born on 29th August 1939, Schumacher was born and raised in New York City. Schumacher’s father was a Baptist from Tennessee and died when Schumacher was just four years old.

After completing his high school education, Schumacher went to The Fashion Institute of Design and The New School for Design. He worked in fashion for some time, but he later realized that his true love lies in filmmaking. Schumacher moved to Los Angeles to pursue his career as a filmmaker. He started as a costume designer in many of Woody Allen’s movies, some of which include Interiors and Sleeper. Apart from working as a costume designer, he was also pursuing his MFA from UCLA.

Schumacher started his cinematic career as a screenplay writer. In 1976, he wrote the screenplay for the musical drama movie named ‘ Sparkle Click to look into! >> Read More... ’. Later, in the year 1978, he wrote the screenplay for another low budget movie named Car Wash. In 1981, he made his debut in Hollywood as a director with the movie, The Incredible Shrinking Movie. Schumacher’s best movies of all time were The Lost Boys and St. Elmo’s Fire, both of which were produced by Brat Pack. His directorial skills gathered the attention of many production companies, particularly the Brat Pack production house, which offered him many bigger projects.

After that, he directed another movie named, A Time to Kill, which was also the adaptation of John Grisham novels. In 1995, he directed Batman Forever, which ended up as the highest-grossing movie of the year 1995. In 1997, Schumacher was again hired by the Warner Bros to direct Batman and Robin. The film received appreciation from the viewers, but was considered a failure by the critics. Schumacher also directed two video songs of the Batman Franchise namely The End Is the Beginning Is the End and Kiss from a Rose.

After that, Schumacher switched to making low budget movies. His most famous works include the movie ‘8MM’ and ‘Flawless’. 8MM received an honorable mention at the 46th Berlin International Film Festival. In 2004, Schumacher directed the movie, The Phantom of the Opera, which was an adaptation of the Original Stage Musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
