John Singleton, also known as John Daniel Singleton is an American screenwriter, film director, and a producer. He is best known for his work as a director in the movie Boyz n the Hood. He was also nominated at the Academy for the Best Director. He was the youngest and first African American to get nominated for the award. John was a resident of South Los Angeles and most of his movies focus on the violence prevailing in the city. Some of his most famous movies revolving around the same topic are Higher Learning, Baby Boy, and Poetic Justice. He is known for his performance in some action-pact movies like Shaft, Four Brothers, and 2 Fast 2 Furious.

John was born on January 6, 1968, in Los Angeles. His father, Danny Singleton was a real estate agent and a financial planner and his mother Sheila Ward-Johnson was a sales executive for a pharmaceutical company. He went to Blair High School in California and after completing his schooling, he attended Pasadena City College. After completing his undergraduate studies from Pasadena City College, he went to the University of Southern California.

He graduated from USC in the year 1990 and was also a member of the fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi. John was enrolled in USC School of Cinematic Arts for Filming Writing Program. John debuted into the Hollywood in the year 1991 with his Boyz n the Hood. He became the youngest director to get nominated at the Academy Awards. The Library of Congress, in the year 2002 declared the movie with the title “Culturally Significant.” The movie is selected by the United States Library of Congress in the National Film Registry. After the huge success of Boyz n the Hood, John directed the movie Poetic Justice in the year 1993. The movie was an American Romantic-drama movie starring Janet Jackson.

The movie received some nominations in the Golden Globe Awards and the Academy Awards. After that, in 1995, John directed the movie Higher Learning. The movie received mixed reviews. In 1991, John also directed Michael Jackson’s video song Remember the Time. In 1997, Singleton directed the movie named Rosewood-based upon the racial violence prevailing in the States of America. The movie made its way to the 47th Berlin International Film Festival.

In 2001, Singleton directed and produced the movie Baby Boy, which received many positive reviews from the viewers. In 2002, he directed 2 Fast 2 Furious, which received mixed to negative reviews along with his one other movie in the year 2005 named Four Brothers. In 2013, Singleton was hired as a director for directing the Tupac biography films. But later he was replaced by Carl Franklin. John is married to Justice Maya Singleton and has four children.
