After a few years, he adopted his mother’s maiden name as his surname. His mother was an African-American, and his father belonged to Puerto Ricans. He completed his schooling at Lackawanna High School. He completed his Bachelor’s degree at Binghamton University and Master’s at Wayne State University. From Buffalo State College and Wayne State University, he got an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters. He has four children in total.
