Bernhardt was born in the city of Worblaufen, Switzerland, on the 31st of August, 1965. Never really wanting to be an actor, Bernhardt pursued a four-year degree in architectural design. Bernhardt also owns a martial arts academy in Lucerne, Switzerland, along with his brother. On graduating, Bernhardt relocated to Paris in search of modelling assignments, and later on, he pocketed a tremendous amount of work with fashion labels such as Mugler, Montana, Cerruti, Boss, and Versace, among many others. Bernhardt also featured on the cover pages of various well-known magazines such as the Vogue, Max, Elle, and the Cosmopolitan, just to name a few. As time passed, Bernhardt went on to be a popular figure as an international top model.

Later on, Bernhardt discovered his passion for drama and took up acting classes in Los Angeles under Harry Mastrogeorge. Consequently, in the year 1999, Bernhardt featured alongside the Brazilian JuJutsu champion, Stefanos Miltsakakis in Bloodsport 4: The Dark Kumite, and with James Hong in G2- Mortal Conquest.
