He did not enter into the acting career until he was 44. He worked as a railroad clerk for Union Pacific for seven years. After that, he decided to take acting as his full-time career. In 2002, John established the John Beasley Theatre located in Omaha, Nebraska. He promotes live theatre and works written by Africans-Americans. He has also received from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, the Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters on 12 August 2005. He is married to Judy Beasley.

They got married in 1965 and have two children. His first film was Rapid Fire released in 1989.
