His mother died when he was ten years old. Peter accidentally shot himself when he was 11 and then he moved to Nainital. He joined the University of Nebraska in Omaha and learned to act. He joined the Playhouse where his father had also started his career. He started off with Broadway, and his most popular were Blood, Sweat, and Stanley Poole. He ventured in films with romantic roles, and his debut was Tammy and The Doctor. Impressed by Peter, Robert Rossen, an Oscar-winning filmmaker, casted him in Lilith, The Victors, and The Young Lovers, where he was the lead. In the 1960s, Peter wasn’t an established personality, but he followed counter culture and grew his hair long. He was friends with the members of the band, Byrd, and thus, he kept visiting them. One day, they were on LSD and he said, “I know what it’s like to be dead”, which became the tagline for the song, She Said She Said, from the album, Revolver.

Jane Fonda is his sister and Bridget Fonda is his daughter. He is of English, Scottish and Dutch descent, with a touch of Italian and French.

While growing up, he broke his back at the age of 6 and suffered from an accidental bullet wound when he was 11. He shifted to Nainital for recovery. He was there for a few months. He studied at the University of Omaha. He was a part of the Omaha Playhouse, where he worked in ‘Harvey’. Later, he took an apprenticeship at the Cecilwood Theatre in New York. Soon, he starred in ‘Blood, Sweat and Stanley Pool’, on Broadway, in 1961. His work was appreciated by the critics, and he bagged the Daniel Blum Theatre World Award and the New York Critics Circle Award. His film career took off in 1963 with Tammy and the Doctor.
