Raymond J. Winstone, his father, used to run a business of fruit and vegetables, while Margaret, his mother used to carry out the job of emptying the fruit machines. Ray studied in the Brimsdown Primary School, Edmonton County School, and the Corona Theatre School to pursue education. He borrowed extra tuition money a drama teacher, who was the mother of one of his friends, and appeared as a newspaper seller in the Emil and the Detectives' production. He enrolled his name at the Corona Stage Academy after he decided to pursue drama as his career. His first major role was in the film What a Crazy World.
