She was born in a wealthy family. Her parents are Grace Valle and Moore Peters Huffman. A year after the birth, her mother and father divorced, and she was raised mostly by her mother. She has six sisters and one brother. Huffman studied in a private boarding school, The Putney School in Putney, Vermont. She completed her graduation from Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan in 1981. She had also attended New York University, Circle in the Square and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, England. Huffman started her career from the theater; her first debut came on 1982, A Taste of Honey as Joe.

She also debuted on Broadway. Some of her famous theater shows are- Been Taken as Jill, Boy’s Life as Maggie in 1988, Oh, Hell! as Glenna, The Loop, Three Sisters, The Anarchist, and numerous other theater she plays. In 1995, Huffman won Obie award for the play The Cryptogram. Huffman made her debut in the film in 1988. Her first film was Things Change in which she did a small role. She did numerous movies. She did fantastic work in all these pictures. She started on the television with the drama Golden years, which based on a novel in 1991.
