Joan Plowright, also Dame Joan Ann Plowright, was born in Brigg, Lincolnshire, in a family confined to her parents Daisy Margaret and William Earnest Plowright. Her father was a journalist and newspaper editor. She completed her education fromScunthorpe Grammar School, and further she attended Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Joan Plowright was an active theater artist before she plunged to movies. She was successful throughout her theater career, and the legacy continued in movies as well.

The actress started her career as a stage artist at Croydon in 1948. She gave many significant performances at the Royal Court Theatre. She left a strong mark as Margery Pinchwife in The Country Wife. Her theater career went on smooth, and she got a break in movies as well.

The Entertainer released in 1960 with her portraying a role with Sir Laurence Olivier. She grabbed a Tony Award for her performance in A Taste of Honey. Her first marriage to Roger cage didn’t work out, and she later married Laurence Olivier in 1961. This marriage was a strong union that ended only after Olivier’s death in 1989.Through the course of her marriage with him; she remained actively involved in Theatre as well as movies. She delivered good performances in Enchanted April (1992) and Dennis the Menace (1993).

Her outstanding movie presence made her achieve nominations in Academy Award. She added Golden Globe award to her kitty around the same time. The award list increased, and she achieved another Golden Globe Award. The role of Soviet dictator’s mother-in-law earned her an Emmy Award nomination. Later she won Women in Film Crystal Award. Queen’s New Year Honor brought glory to her twice in her life. In the year 1970, she became the Commander of the Order of The British umpire and later in the year 2004, she became Dame Commander (DBE).

After her marriage to Sir Laurence Olivier, she received various titles such as Lady Olivier and Baroness Olivier. Throughout her career, she gained recognitions in the form of honor and titles. However, she rolled out of her long-lived career due to her declining eyesight.
