M Sebastin

M Sebastian was born on 18th October, 1907 and died on May 29, 1945. He was born in a Jewish Family in Bralia. He was also known as Mihail Sebastian. He was a remarkable playwright, novelist, journalist, essayist and lawyer as well. He was a Romanian. He used to right dramas, novels and autobiographies. Sebastian completed his education in Bralia and then he moved to Bucharest to study law. He wanted to know about Romanian intellectuals and the exciting idea behind this therefore soon he was attracted towards literature. Few of his favorite novelists were MirceaEliade, Eugene Lonesco and Emil Cioran. Sebastian himself published many popular novels and plays some of his outstanding novels are ‘Orasul Cu Salcami’(The Acacia tree City) and ‘Accidentul’ (The Accident). His writings are immensely influenced by the French writers such as Jules Renard and Marcel Proust.

His favorite subjects were Cultural History, fictionand Political History, he liked to explore more about these subjects and write about them. Sebastian was a Jew and this was the reason he was treated as an outsider and this used to happen amongst his friends as well. He published many incredible novels in 1934, his novel got published by the name ‘For Two Thousand Years’ (De doua mii de ani) and this means that what it meant to be a Jew in Romania. The preface of the novel ‘For Two Thousand Years’ was written by one of Sebastian’s friend who was good to him and he did a very big blunder in the preface and wrote something which was not related at all, then Sebastian decided to take revenge and he published the preface which led to a controversial situation. After this controversy Sebastian declared himself a proud Romanian.

He then wrote ‘Cum Am Devenit Huligan’, which means- How I became a Hooligan. In this book he answered all the things and explained all the critics to the public. In a very decent manner he put forward his point of view in front of everyone. He said that I am a Romania born and I am a Jew and this means that I am a Jew as well as a Romanian and if anyone says that I am not a Romanian than this is same as saying the trees that you are not trees. Sebastian became famous in Romania because of his plays that he wrote and people loved them a lot. Sebastian loved music a lot and he used to attend a lot of concerts as well. He had written a lot of noteworthy plays and novels.
