Kunken is well-known for his nomination for a Tony Award for his role in the Broadway play Enron. Frost/Nixon and Rock 'n' Roll' are two more Broadway credits. Kunken's father is a dentist, while his mother is a retired elementary school teacher. Kunken graduated from Tufts University with a B.A. in 1993. He completed his graduation from the Juilliard School's Graduate Acting Program, where he was associated with Drama Division's Group 26 and received both the John Houseman Prize and the Pearl and Rolands Grant.

Kunken has appeared in David Auburn's The Columnist, High, Tom Stoppard's Rock 'n' Roll, Frost/Nixon, Festen, and Proof, among other plays. He was nominated for a Tony Award for Featured Actor in a Play in 2010 for his portrayal as CFO Andrew Fastow in Enron. At the Public Theatre, he appeared in The Story (2003), Henry VIII, and A Dybbuk.
