Spinella’s father was an American naval airplane mechanic and was born in Naples, Italy on October 11, 1956. He later grew up in Glendale, Arizona. Stephen graduated from the University of Arizona, drama department and later attended MFA from NYU's Tisch School of the Art’s Graduate Acting Program, completing his studies, in 1982. In personal life, Stephen openly confesses that he is gay.

He had consecutively bagged Tony-awards in the category of Best Featured Actor and along winning the nomination of Best Actor for his performance in Angels, in America: Millennium Approaches as “Prior Walter” and Angels, in America: Perestroika respectively. However, Spinella was also a prominent nominee in the category of best-featured actor for “James Joyce's The Dead”.

The actor got his spotlight while working on his popular performance in some great films like Ravenous (1999), Milk (2008) and Rubber (2010). Although, it is a long list of his works not only an actor in films and tv-shows but also in stage theatre.

Stephen was recently, while taking his shirt off on stage, was criticised for his skinniness by the leviathan amount of audience. To which he later, counteracted by saying that his whole family is skinny and all generic issue.

In his interview, he expressed his hearty feelings for HIV-positive people, by saying that they are fully functioning human individuals, should be bestowed with equal rights like other individuals. The biggest achievement of his life, according to him is, when he won the Tony award while competing with his own ideal as an actor, Zakes Mokae, about which he proudly expressed himself that, he has reached a new standard after winning this.
