She spent her childhood in Peoria, Illinois. Her parents, Sylvia and James Manheim, were school teachers. She has a brother named Karl and a son named Milo Jacob. She got a BFA degree from the University of California in Santa Cruz in 1984 and MFA from New York University in 1987.

She was a sign-language interpreter at some hospitals, an experience that came handy in some of her roles. She also taught and guest lectured at various American institutes. She became interested in acting after participating at a Rennaissance Fair when she was 16. Camryn played uncredited roles in the movies Sudden Impact in 1983 and Creator in 1985. She then played roles in Hollywood movies like The Road To Wellville, Cracking Up, Jeffrey, Eraser, Mercury Rising and several others. She acted in television films like Deadly Whisper, Loretta Clairborne Story, Jennifer, A Girl Thing, Kiss My Act, Laramie Project and many others.
