Charu is also a trained swimmer who made an Indian representation in the 1982 Asian Games. He was a springboard diver in that international meet. Charu is the son M.N.C Sharma, who was not only an educationist but has also held the post of Vice-Principal of Mayo College in Ajmer district in the state of Rajasthan. Mr. Sharma, the academician, had also been the Principal of Birla Vidyamandir in Uttarakhand.

Charu took birth in the state of Uttar Pradesh carrying on with his schooling in the state of Rajasthan. Later, he took admission in St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, which helped him to complete his graduation successfully. Charu's early life saw him working in a tea company based in Delhi, and later he shifted to a cigarette company in Hyderabad. His life as a commentator commenced with his participation in Asian Games. The preliminary stage of being a commentator saw Charu leading a hectic and practically nomadic life. He has worked as a professional anchor with ESPN. Lately, the alumni of Mayo College also held the post of CEO of Royal Challengers Team in the IPL. Although rumours claim that he was later being terminated, the officials insist that Charu Sharma resigned at his free will.
