Sushil Majumdar

Sushil Majumdar was a Hindi Director, and actor. He was born on December 22, 1906, in Comilla, Bengal, British India, which is now in Bangladesh. He came from an illustrious and wealthy family. His father was Basanta Kumar Majumdar, and he was a revolutionary leader of Bengal. His mother was Hemaprova, and she was also a revolutionary, a member of the Bengal Assembly in 1930s, and, a chairperson of the Congress Party, at Calcutta Corporation. He went to Shantiniketan School, where he started participating in cultural shows, and began acting. In 1916, he participated in a show Falguni that was staged, by Rabindranath Tagore in his ancestral home, which is located in Jorasanko. After this, he joined the Non-Corporation Movement, and was imprisoned for a bit of time.

Later, he joined the College of Engineering, which is now known as Jadavpur University, but he did not complete his studies, and left it in the middle, and in 1928, he joined the film industry. He started his career, as an actor in the Bengal Movies production company. He did many things like assisting the director, being a cameraman, and costume designer, along with acting, and he had a harrowing journey, without having a godfather in the film industry. In 1929, he worked under the legendary Prathamesh Chandra Barua in Barua Pictures. Ekada was the first movie that he directed.

He directed many films in his career, namely Ekada in 1932, Tarubala in 1936, Muktisnan in 1937, Rikta in 1939, Tatinir Bichar in 1940, Pratishodh in 1941, Avayer Biye in 1942, Hospital and Jogajog in 1943, Begum in 1945, Char Aankhen in 1946, Abhijog in 1947, Sarbahara and Sipahi Ka Sapna in 1948, Digbhranta in 1950, Ratrir Tapashya in 1952, Moner Mayur, Bhangagara, and Dukhir Imaan in 1954, Aparadhi in 1955, Daner Maryada and Subharatri in 1956, Sesh Parichaya in 1957, Marmabani in 1958, Pushpadhanu in 1959, Hospital in 1960, Kathin Maya in 1961, Sancharini in 1962, Kaalsrote and Lal Pathar in 1964, Shuk Sari in 1969, Lal Patthar in 1971, Basanti Purnama in 1973, and Agni Sambhava in 1982.

He died in 1988.
