Som Thakur

Som Thakur, son of Deep Chand Thakur and Shrimati Shyamdevi, was a renowned Brij poet and lyricist of Hindi Cinema. His real name was Som Prakash Thakur. He was born on 5 March 1934 in Ahir Pada, Rajmandi, Agra, Uttar Pradesh. Being the only child of his parents, he was cared for with immense love and affection from his parents. He has completed his education from Government High School, Agra. After that, he completed his graduation in biology from Agra College, and then he tried to study B. Sc. Also, but meanwhile, his interest turned towards Literature and Poetry. Som has completed his B.A. and M.A. in English and Hindi Literature to gain deep knowledge of poetry. He is a very kind and humble person.

He started his career in 1959 by becoming a teacher at Agra College and then at St. John’s College from 1963 to 1969. Som loved his job but suddenly he realized that something was missing in his life. As he wanted to become a poet, Som resigned from his job and went to America to spread his love for the Hindi language. But, before going to America, he went to Canada and then Mauritius by the Central Government to spread his love for Hindi. Som stayed in America till 2004. After 2004, when som came back, he was selected as a Working President of Uttar Pradesh Hindi Sansthan by Mulayam Singh Yadav. He enjoyed this post for three and a half years, after that he returned to Agra.

Later on, Som Thakur reached Nagri Pracharini Sabha and became a member of it. There he saw the Deepshikha, a selected poetry book written by Maha Devi Verma, which was a very famous book from which he was influenced for a very long time. Inspired by Deepshikha, som started writing his poems. One of his written poems, which he recited in front of his friends was Yatanayein Ye Nahi Nirman Ke Pal Hai. After this, he started writing more poems and was also invited to Kavi Sammelan on special occasions. Some of his famous poems were Abhiyan, Ek Richa Patal Ko, Chandan and Abir, Lokpriya, Braj Chandima and many more. He was also awarded with Hindi Gaurav Samman, Yash Bharati Samman, Braj Bhasha Puraskar, and many more.
