Shahu Modak

Shahu Modak was born on 25th April 1918 in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra. He was an actor and did many Hindi and Marathi language movies. He was kind of the only choice for directors for mythological roles of Lord Krishna in the films. He was Marathi-Christian by birth. He got a part in the next year in the movie Bulbule Punjab. And from then on he kept on working in one or two films every year. He worked in Nand Ke Lala and Seva Sadan in the year 1934. He was in the movie Hind Mahila and ‘Honhar’ released in 1936 and in 1937 in Begunah. He played the role of Moti in ‘Aadmi’ and Ganpat in ‘Manoos’ in 1939. In 1943 he played roles in ‘ Dulhan Dulhan is a Pakistani thriller romantic TV serial >> Read More... ’, Ladaai Ke Baad, and ‘ Kanoon Kanoon is a show based on the court-room drama ser >> Read More... ’. In 1944 he had roles in Maharati Karna, and ‘Geet’. In 1945 he worked for Meghdoot and Shri Krishnarjun Yuddh. His other movies are like Dasu Yaa Maa and Uttara Abhimanyu in 1946 and Seedha Raasta in 1947 and ‘Mandir’ in 1948 and Maya Bazaar, Nar Narayan, Sant Namdev and Veer Ghatotkach in 1949. Bhagwan Shri Krishna, Bhishma Pratigya, Shri Ram Avatar and Vastal Kalyanam in the year 1950.

In Jai Mahakali, Vitthal Rakhkumai, Hi Mazi Lakshmi, Shri Krishna Satyabhama in 1951. In Bhakta Puran and Draupati Vastra Haran in 1952. He had roles in movies Amar Kirtan, Chakradhari and Durga Puja in 1954 and in ‘Mastani’, Shiv Bhakta and Mi Tulas Tuzya Aangani in 1955. Five movies in the year 1956 Astik, Dashera, Dwaarikadheesh, Harihar Bhakti and Sudarshan Chakra.

Year 1957 came with ten movies starring Shahu Modak which were named as Bhakta Dhruv in the beginning followed by Laxmi Pooja and then Mohini, Naag Lok, Narsi Bhagat, Utavala Narad which was a hit, Raja Vikram, Ram Laxman got appreciated by all, Shesh Nag, and Shyam ki Jogan. Other movies starring him are Gaj Gauri, Gopichand, Sudamyache Pohe, Harishchandra, Ram Bhakt Vibhishan, Ram Leela, Tere Dwar Khada Bhagwaan, Balram Shri Krishna, Talash, Sant Tulsidas, Har Har Mahadev, Jai Bajrang Bali, Jai Ambe Maa and Meera.

His last film was Krishna-Krishna in which he played the role of Guru Sandeepan. He did a total of 85 movies. He was admired for all his roles by the fans. He was married to Pratibha Modak. He is known for singing two good songs as well. In Manoos film he played the part of a policeman and so an award is dedicated to him and is given to any senior artist since 2001. This award is given by the Police Commissioner to the recipient. He died at the age of 75 in the year 1993.
