It was in the early 50s that Anita Guha, the “mythology queen” of later years, came from Kolkata to Mumbai in search of a place in the entertainment industry, being only 15 at that time. That was the time when there were scores of Bengali producers and directors in Mumbai, and she got her break in 1955 in the film “Tangewaali”, remembered more for her co-star, the versatile Kishore Kumar Kishore Kumar is an Indian playback singer, who ha >> Read More... , and the lilting tunes of O.P.Nayyar. Her stretch of mythological films started roughly after this period starting from “Sampoorna Ramayana” in 1961, “Shree Ram Bharat Milap” in 1965 and Tulsi Vivah in 1971. Other notable mythological films in which she acted were "KaviKalidas", "Jai Dwarkadesh" and "Krishna Krishna".Other than mythological films she also has a number of period and historical films to her credit including "SangeetSamratTansen", "Kan Kan Mein Bhagwan" and "Veer Bhimsen". However, her biggest success came from “Jai SantoshiMaa”in which she almost became a cult figure. Funnily like many others, she too had not heard of goddess Santoshi before that. This low-budget film shot in a surprisingly short period of 10-12 days was a surprise hit, not only breaking box office records and running for long stretches even in remote villages, but also becoming a cultural cum religious phenomenon of sorts.People did not stop at worshipping goddess Santoshibut also flooded Guha’s house asking for her blessings. The paradox was that she herself was unhappy to have been typecast as a mythological actress, since she perceived this effectively stopped her from getting mainstream roles. In one of her last films before her death in 2007, she was seen acting as Rajesh Khanna’s mother in the hugely successful “ Aradhana Click to look into! >> Read More... ”.
