Born in Darjeeling, West Bengal, on February 11, 1941, Dambar Bahadur Budaprithi is an Indian jazz musician, keyboardist, vocalist, record producer and, composer.He accomplished in genres such as Indo jazz fusion, Indipop and modern progressive and contemporary jazz.

He has frequently alluded to as the Godfather of Indian Jazz. Louis Banks is the son of George and Saraswati Banks from Gorkha family. His father was a musician in Darjeeling. His initial music training was on account of his dad and neighbour Mrs. Myers.

His dad, Pushkar bahadur was a Nepalese trumpeter who shifted to Calcutta in the mid-40s to become part of a European Band. Consequently, he changed his name to George Banks. His granddad, Bakhat Bahadur Budaprithi, had formed Shreeman Gambhira Nepali, the Nepalese national anthem which was the official hymn from 1962-2006.

He went to St. Roberts School in Darjeeling. Detecting Banks' enthusiasm for western music, while thirteen years old he began playing the trumpet and the guitar, his dad changed his name to Louis Banks in honour to Louis Armstrong. This difference in name gave the young Banks the certainty to become showbiz royalty in the realm of western music.

He began getting piano lessons from his dad and furthermore played in his band. Banks did his college from St. Joseph's College in Darjeeling, where he kept on learning piano. After completing college, he shifted to Kathmandu with his dad's music band and chose to end up as a full-time musician; it was there he found jazz music. In the late 60s, as an individual from the incredible Weather Report band, for three years, he performed in Kathmandu at the Soaltee Hotel.

During his stay there, he dismissed an offer from R. D. Burman of working in Mumbai with him. Not glad in Kathmandu, he took the base to Calcutta, where he met Braz Gonsalves, a saxophonist and a vocalist, Pam Craine in 1971 and framed The Louis Banks Brotherhood.

The band started performing at the Hindustan Hotel which prompted a call to play at a well-known nightclub, the Blue Fox Restaurant, well-known for its support of live western music. From that point on, he started getting work on making commercial jingles and stage musicals.

In 1974, Banks moved toward R. D. Burman, who was a regular guest at the Blue Fox Restaurant and requested Burman to let him join his group in Mumbai, Burman cheerfully took him in. He was soon acquainted with various world music genres and flourished in the music scene in Mumbai.

As Banks solidified his place and status in the city, he advanced live jazz at Mumbai nightclubs. Alongside Goan saxophonist Braz Gonsalves, he started the 'Indo-Jazz Ensemble,' creating music on Indian established scales and Jazz rhythms, joining Indian instruments such as thavil and ghatam in 1979.

He also shaped a team called Sangam collaborating with Ramamani, a Carnatic traditional vocalist, and together they executed around 60 shows across Europe.

He took an interest in festivals, the gathering, however, was for short time as Ramamani hailed from Bangalore, while Louis situated in Mumbai and the coordination turned out to be excessively hard. Banks made the tunes to the iconic short film, Mile Sur Mera Tumhara on the incorporation of Doordarshan, around then sole broadcaster of India in 1988. Because of its prevalence, the melody has regularly been named the informal Indian anthem.

He went ahead to give music to comparable devoted short movies such as Spread the light of freedom and Deshraag. His 2008 coordinated effort as pianist/keyboards, co-producer, and arranger on the collection Miles from India, a tribute to the author of recent jazz Miles Davis, was selected for the Grammy Awards in 2008 as the Best Contemporary Jazz Album.
